What to do once you're insured

What to do once you're insured

Signing the policy isn't the last step. A few small things now will save you a headache later.

Save your proof of insurance in two places

Keep a digital copy on your phone and a printed one in the glovebox. Most states require you to show proof of insurance during a traffic stop or after an accident, and having both means you’re never caught without it.

Double-check your policy details

Confirm the coverage types, limits, and deductible on the final documents match what you agreed to when you signed up. Mistakes are rare, but they’re much easier to fix in the first week than months later.

Know what to do if you need to file a claim

Save your insurer’s claims phone number somewhere you’ll actually find it in an emergency, and take a moment to understand what information you’ll need to provide — the basics are usually just the date, location, and other party’s details.
